Sitting at the western end of the Three Gorges in Fengjie, surrounded by water on three sides, White Emperor City was long a strategic stronghold and is famed for Liu Bei's deathbed entrustment during the Three Kingdoms era.

Many poets left verses here; Li Bai's line about leaving White Emperor City amid rosy clouds made it famous. From the town one can gaze at Kuimen and the Qutang Gorge.
