Zhangjiajie in northwest Hunan is famed for its unique quartz-sandstone pillar landscape. The Wulingyuan core area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the inspirations for the floating mountains in the film Avatar.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream form the classic route. Thousands of stone pillars rise into the mist, and the 'Southern Sky Column' in Yuanjiajie is the signature view.

Tianmen Mountain

Famous for Heaven's Gate cave, the winding 'Road to Heaven' and a long cable car. The glass skywalk clings to the cliff for a thrilling experience; the cable car runs about 7.5 km over the city.

Planning tips

The scenic area is huge with many trails, so allow 2-3 days. Book ahead and avoid peak hours. Weather changes quickly — bring rain gear and non-slip shoes.
