Shandong Aims to Build 6,000 km of Tourism Roads by End-2028
Shandong held a meeting in Tai'an on tourism road and tourism transport network construction, aiming for 6,000 km of tourism roads and 500 connected scenic areas by the end of 2028.
The Shandong Provincial Conference on Promoting Tourist Road Construction and Tourism Transportation Network Construction was recently held in Tai'an. The meeting summarized the province's achievements in tourist roads and integrated transportation-tourism development, deployed key tasks for the next stage, and continued to promote the iterative upgrading of roads from “transportation lines” into “scenic lines, economic lines and livelihood lines.” The meeting proposed striving to build 6,000 kilometers of tourist roads by the end of 2028, linking 500 scenic areas, and rolling out a total of more than 50 quality tourist roads with distinct themes and diverse features, to create the “Good Roads Shandong” distinctive IP and comprehensively tell the story of Shandong's integrated transportation-tourism development.
According to the introduction, since launching the special action for integrated transportation-tourism development in 2023, Shandong has systematically planned and built a tourism transportation network layout of “one axis, five corridors and multiple branches,” focusing on creating the cultural main axis of “one mountain, one water, one sage” and five themed corridors — a Thousand-Mile Coast, the Lu-Style Canal, Red Yimeng, the Yellow River's Entry into the Sea, and Great Wall Traces. Along the routes, a unified brand emblem and signage system has been set up, distinctive tourist service stations are jointly built and shared, and viewing platforms, parking spots and slow-traffic systems are laid out according to local conditions, building the “Friendly Shandong · Good Roads Shandong” integrated transportation-tourism brand system and achieving deep, integrated advancement of transportation and culture and tourism.
After three years of intensive construction, Shandong's tourist road construction and integrated transportation-tourism development have established a whole-area transportation system of “fast access, slow touring.” On the fast-access side, the province's high-speed rail operating mileage has exceeded 3,000 kilometers, its expressways open to traffic have surpassed 9,300 kilometers, and 11 civil transport airports have been put into operation, achieving 30-minute access to 4A-rated tourist attractions and one-hour rapid connection to all A-rated tourist attractions; on the slow-touring side, the province has built more than 3,300 kilometers of tourist roads and 285 standardized tourist service stations, linking more than 190 quality scenic areas, with the main frameworks of the five corridors basically in place.
