Also known as Kunming Lake, Dianchi lies to the southwest of the city and is Yunnan's largest freshwater lake, often called the “Pearl of the Plateau.” Its surface sits at about 1,886 metres, ringed by mountains, with Haigeng Park and Yunnan Nationalities Village along its shores.
Every winter tens of thousands of black-headed gulls fly in from Siberia to overwinter here, making Haigeng Dam a popular place for locals and visitors to feed the birds and take photos. The lakeside greenway is ideal for cycling and walking, and the wide-open sunsets over the water are a sight to behold.
