The Stone Forest Scenic Area lies in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, about 78 km from Kunming, and is a classic karst landscape. Limestone columns and peaks stand densely packed in countless shapes, earning it the name “the finest wonder under heaven.”
The site is divided into the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, with the “Ashima” rock peak famous for a local Sani legend. This is also the homeland of the Yi Sani people, and rich folk performances take place during festivals such as the Torch Festival.
