City Overview
Kunming lies in the central Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau and is the political, economic and cultural centre of Yunnan, as well as a gateway to South and Southeast Asia. The city sits at about 1,900 metres, with plenty of sunshine and a marked day–night temperature gap; flowers bloom year-round, and black-headed gulls fly in from Siberia each winter to overwinter here, becoming a famous sight at Green Lake.

Dianchi is Yunnan's largest freshwater lake, and the Haigeng Dam on its shore is a fine spot for watching gulls and sunsets. The Stone Forest is famed for its karst scenery and often called “the finest wonder under heaven.” The Green Lake–Yunnan University–Wenlin Street area concentrates the street life and cultural flavour of old Kunming, while Longmen on the Western Hills offers sweeping views over the lake and the whole city.

Fuxian Lake, Jianshui Ancient Town and the Yuanyang rice terraces also lie within the province and suit extended itineraries.

Kunming Changshui International Airport and the South Railway Station connect to major cities nationwide, with convenient metro and bus service in town. Treat Kunming as the starting point of a Yunnan trip: spend 2–3 days on the city and the Stone Forest, then take a train to Dali and Lijiang to link up the classic western Yunnan route.
