Beijing, the capital of China, has over 3,000 years of history and 800 years as a capital. Home to the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and the Great Wall, it is the top place to feel both imperial history and modern China.

Forbidden City & Tian'anmen

The Forbidden City is the world's largest surviving wooden palace complex; the Hall of Supreme Harmony and Palace of Heavenly Purity on the central axis are magnificent. Tian'anmen Square lies just to the south — book in advance with real names.

The Great Wall

Badaling is convenient and grand; Mutianyu is quieter and greener. Hike up for sweeping views of the wall winding across the mountains.

Gardens and alleys

The Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven show imperial garden and ceremonial architecture at their finest, while the hutongs around Nanluoguxiang and Shichahai keep the flavor of old Beijing.
