Yuelu Mountain rises on the west bank of the Xiang River, a famous mountain blending nature and culture. Maple groves and ancient trees are interwoven with the tombs and memorials of modern notable figures, and the autumn maples are especially celebrated; Aiwan Pavilion takes its name from a line of Du Mu's poetry.
At the foot lies Yuelu Academy, founded in the Northern Song dynasty and one of the four great ancient academies, where a tradition of teaching has continued for a thousand years; its courtyards, lecture hall and library are well preserved. The academy stands next to Hunan University, and from the summit you can look out over the Xiang River and the city.
