City Overview
Haikou lies in the north of Hainan Island on the Qiongzhou Strait, facing the Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong across the water, and is the provincial capital. The city has a tropical maritime climate — warm and humid with abundant sunshine all year, especially pleasant in winter — making it the northern gateway for a winter escape.

The Qilou Arcade Streets preserve a great many Southeast-Asian-style buildings and are the core district for experiencing Haikou's history and street life. Wanlv Park is a seaside park with open lawns and palm groves, ideal for walking and sea views. The Volcanic Crater Geopark features volcanic landforms and tropical vegetation, while Holiday Beach is a coastal leisure spot on the edge of town.

Getting Around & Itinerary Tips
Haikou Meilan International Airport, Haikou Station and the east-ring high-speed rail connect to destinations far and wide, and the round-island rail makes reaching Sanya and other places easy. Plan 2–3 days for the city — Qilou Arcade Streets, Wanlv Park and the Volcanic Crater Geopark — then head south along the east route to Sanya and Fenjiezhou Island to complete a round-island itinerary.
