Founded in the 7th century and rebuilt to its present scale in the 17th, the Potala Palace comprises the White and Red Palaces rising in tiers up the hill. It preserves vast murals, stupas and relics — a peak of Tibetan architecture and religious art.
Entry is by timed reservation and photography is barred inside; the top offers a panorama of Lhasa. With many steps at altitude, walk slowly.
