Potala Palace
Built on the Red Hill, this palace-fortress is the symbol of Lhasa and Tibet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Book tickets in advance; early morning and late afternoon give the best light.
Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Street
The Jokhang houses the revered Jowo Shakyamuni statue and is the holiest temple in Tibet. The surrounding Barkhor Street is Lhasa's liveliest pilgrimage circuit and old town, perfect for slow walks, sweet tea and people-watching.

Norbulingka, the former summer palace, offers quiet gardens. With more time, take day trips to the holy lakes Yamdrok Lake and Namtso.
