City Overview
In southwest China, Chengdu is the political, economic and cultural center of Sichuan and a key transport hub for the region. Mild and humid, it moves at an easy pace, with teahouses and hotpot restaurants on almost every street.
Must-see Highlights
The Giant Panda Base, Kuanzhai Alley and Wuhou Shrine are near-mandatory stops, where old-town street life meets Three Kingdoms culture.
Around the City
Beyond the city, Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng share World Heritage status, while the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei are within an hour or two by high-speed rail.
Food and Experiences
Hotpot, skewers, dandan noodles and longchaoshou tempt the appetite, while Sichuan opera face-changing and bowl tea are well worth savouring.
Getting Around and Itinerary Tips
Allow three to four days: two in the city for pandas and heritage sites, then one or two more for Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng or Leshan.
