Nanputuo Temple stands at the foot of the Five Old Men Peaks in southern Xiamen Island. First built in the Tang dynasty, it is an important Buddhist temple and centre of Buddhist education in southern Fujian. Built against the mountain, its Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall and Buddhist library rise in tiers, grand in scale.
Behind the temple, stone steps lead up to the Five Old Men Peaks for views over Xiamen University and the sea. The temple's vegetarian cuisine has a good reputation, and its location next to the university and the coast makes it a natural stop together with the campus and the Island Ring Road.
