Founded by the patriotic overseas Chinese Tan Kah Kee, Xiamen University sits between mountains and sea, with Chinese-and-Western buildings forming a distinctive “Jiageng style.” Red-brick walls, swallowtail ridges and palms make a striking picture, and spots such as Furong Lake and Lover's Valley (Qingren Valley) are especially pleasant.
