City Overview
Lijiang lies in northwestern Yunnan at an average altitude of about 2,400 meters, with a highland monsoon climate of abundant sunshine and large day-night temperature swings. Home to the Naxi, Yi and other ethnic groups, it has distinctive cultural landscapes formed by Dongba culture and the waterways of the old town.

Lijiang Old Town is built along its waterways, with the Mu Mansion and Sifang Square as its landmarks. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of the lower-latitude areas of modern maritime glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere, and can be reached by cable car for views. Shuhe Ancient Town is quieter and preserves the historic feel of the Tea Horse Road.

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport and the high-speed rail link to Kunming and other cities make access easy, and trips to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge can be done by chartered car or tour. As Lijiang is high in altitude, newcomers should rest and keep warm, and a four- to six-day plan linking the old town, the snow mountain and surrounding routes is recommended.
